About Vicious…

Emilia

They say love and hate are the same feelings experienced under different circumstances, and it’s true.
The man who comes to me in my dreams also haunts me in my nightmares.
He is a brilliant lawyer.
A skilled criminal.
A beautiful liar.
A bully and a savior, a monster and a lover.
Ten years ago, he made me run away from the small town where we lived. Now, he came for me in New York, and he isn’t leaving until he takes me with him.

Vicious

She is a starving artist.
Pretty and evasive like cherry blossom.
Ten years ago, she barged into my life unannounced and turned everything upside down.
She paid the price.
Emilia LeBlanc is completely off-limits, my best friend’s ex-girlfriend. The woman who knows my darkest secret, and the daughter of the cheap Help we hired to take care of our estate.
That should deter me from chasing her, but it doesn’t.
So she hates me. Big fucking deal.
She better get used to me.

L.J. Shen is a OCA (one-click) author for me. When she releases a new book, I know, without a shadow of a doubt, that I am going buy and love it. It’s Leigh’s superpower, you know, writing kick-ass super awesome books.

200

Vicious is the first full length edition to the new Sinners of Saint Series and I couldn’t be happier with it. (The Sinners of Saint storyline starts in the anthology Hot For Teacher with Defy  if you’re interested. It’s a sexier than sin story about a really hot really determined young man that goes after what he wants—his young and hot AF teacher.) Vicious happens to be the second installment of a series that you should totes be into but could be read as a standalone.

…love and hate are the same feelings experienced under different circumstances. The passion is the same. The pain is the same.

To say that this book is good is gross understatement. Vicious, the book’s namesake but more importantly one of the two MCs, is the type of bad boy that only Shen can write so well. Why? Because she has a gift of giving her readers little flecks of insight at a time. She gives you just a sliver so expertly that you’re literally pavloving all over your Kindle frantically swiping the screen whilst dying for more. And she gives you the

feels

like a mutha-fuckin steam engine to the face!

Also, Shen doesn’t just give you a typical love story with lots of hot sex in her books—she gives you a different kind of fuck. Shen delivers words that are so expertly delivered that you forgive her every pain filled twist and turn while swearing you’d give her anything to keep the story going. You NEVER want it to end.

My need for him was just as strong. A warm, heady feeling made my thighs quiver and clench. I wanted to take a bite of the forbidden fruit I’d convinced myself was poisonous. He gave me pain, but ironically, this pain gave me life.

Vicious gives us both past and present views into the how and why of an unforgettable love story between Emilia LeBlanc and and Vicious Baron Spencer. It’s full of hot teenage and adult angst that will leave you frustrated and sated at the same time.

…why the fuck was she still hot as shit? Didn’t matter. I hated her anyway. But her apparent devotion to trying not to be sexy, paired with the fact that she actually was sexy, always made me hard as stone.

This book made a lot of shit happen in my brain. It triggered lots of biz long forgotten in my double-digit years of contented marriage. I wanted. I needed. But most of all, I remembered what it was like to be a teenager again. The pain of wanting something (or someone) that I couldn’t have. The need to relieve the want that vibrated with every fiber of my being. And last but not least how obsessive and all consuming it was—like I would die. I would die of the thirst that was never quenched because I was too young to know what it was that would end my misery. Too young too afraid of rejection and too chickenshit to make a move.

So, in memory of my lost lusts (but I swear to Christ it felt like love) I give you the Sid and Nancy…inspired by one hell of a love story, LJ Shen’s Vicious.

Cocktail: Sid & Nancy

Ingredients:

1-2-3 oz (depending on how stiff you want it) of Pinnacle Blackberry Vodka. I bought this liquor to make some silly cocktail for a ladies night I hosted forever ago. It’s been sitting in my liquor cabinet for an embarrassing long time, because I just didn’t know what to do with it. It’s good. I promise. And if you like berry favored drinks, then you’re gonna love this mix.

2-3 oz of Henry’s Hard Soda hard ginger ale. This stuff is awesome. It gives you the feel of a mixer, but it’s more booze!

A splash of cranberry juice. I use straight cranberry, but if you like it sweeter then use the cocktail.

Ice

Blackberries for mulling and garnish

A large tumbler to mix it.

A martini glass, for serving

Mixing:

This drink requires a little bit of mixing, but it’s not a pain in the ass like Vicious for most of the book (wink). In fact, if you mix it right, it’s a drink that’ll surprise you with how sweet and strong it is—like Emilia.  Because the hard ginger ale (HGA) is carbonated, you’ll want to mix as little as possible to keep dat fizz. I use a large glass—adding the blackberries and mashing them at the bottom first then add all the other ingredients with the HGA last. Then, I run the mix through a strainer, pouring it into a martini glass. It looks classy AF, so that’s why I do it. If you want to just drink it out of the tall glass you mixed it in you can do that too, although you loose a bit of the aesthetic. And we all know that Milli and Vic like their aesthetics.

Drinking:

I suggest you drink the Sid&Nancy while reading Vicious, of course. It’s a nice combination of BLACK (blackberries) and PINK (Cranberry and HGA) that you can consume as easily as Shen’s delicious story. Also, there is a playlist at the beginning of the book with songs that appear in the story so I made a playlist of my own, including Shen’s songs of inspiration. Cheers!

What do I think of L.J. Shen’s Vicious?
